Will the storms that have occurred in recent years and the preparations for future storms have an impact on cabling?

Yes, big storms that have caused large-scale power outages have contributed to tightening the security of supply requirements in the Electricity Market Act. Electrical power network companies have invested in underground cabling before this, but the legislative reform has set clearer requirements and time limits for the work.

The Act also increased the standard compensation paid to customers for power outages. The annual distribution service rate will be reduced by 10% after a 12-hour power outage, and the compensation will gradually increase to 200% if the outage exceeds 288 hours. The standard fee may not exceed EUR 2,000 per year.

In 2019, the average duration of Oulun Energia Siirto ja Jakelu Oy's outages was less than 7 minutes. Our network is therefore already very reliable, but in order to guarantee our customers the legal security of supply, we need to continue investing.
