Tytäryhtiömme Syklo Oy on tehnyt päätöksen vaiheittaisesta etenemisestä Suomen suurimman muovinkierrätyslaitoksen rakentamiseen liittyen
Oulun Energia's subsidiary Syklo Oy announced in February that it plans to build Finland's largest plastic recycling plant in Hyvinkää. The 50,000-tonne plastic recycling plant will increase Finland’s plastic recycling capacity by up to 50 per cent and will enable annual savings of up to 25 million euros for the Finnish national economy as a result of the reduction in the EU Plastic Tax. The plant will also reduce Finland’s estimated greenhouse gas emissions by up to 160,000 tonnes (CO2eq) annually, provided that all the plastic recycled by the plant comes is diverted from incineration. The project’s strategic partner is the Scottish Impact Recycling.
The construction of the plastic recycling plant will be advanced in phases. There was a previous decision to advance phase one, which encompassed project planning and building design, among other things. The decision to proceed has now been made for phase two. Phase two includes finalising detail design, carrying out development work on the Hyvinkää property—including earthworks and forest clearance—and conducting competitive tendering for construction and equipment procurement. The earthworks have already begun and are scheduled for completion this autumn. Progressing in phases ensures the project remains on schedule.
An environmental permit is required for many operations involving waste and recycled raw materials, including plastic recycling. The decision to progress to phases three and four will be made once the environmental permit application process has been completed. An environmental permit is crucial for the project’s progress. Phases three and four include the construction of a production building and commercial production lines.
“The plastic recycling plant represents a major advancement for the entire Finnish circular economy market, as the plant will have the capacity to separate and recycle plastic waste streams containing high levels of impurities, which are currently incinerated. We are eager for the necessary permits to be approved swiftly, allowing us to move forward with the next phase of the project,” says Teemu Koskela, Managing Director at Syklo Oy.
“Project planning has advanced smoothly, and there have been no unusual challenges in the project thus far. The plant’s design work is on track and the tendering process for construction and equipment supplier partners is well underway,” states Syklo’s Head of Technology, Petteri Asikainen.
