Rising production costs will increase the price of district heating from 1 January 2023
Europe is facing a serious energy crisis, which is a direct result of Russia’s war of aggression. As a result, the production costs of district heating, along with the prices of various fuels and emissions allowances, have increased significantly. For these reasons, we have had to review the price of district heating, as have other municipally owned corporations.
The unit rate of district heating will increase by 13% effective 1 January 2023. No changes will be made to the fixed fee. Although we are increasing the price of district heating, we are not passing on all costs to our customers. We want to continue to ensure that there is affordable district heating available in Oulu, in comparison to the national average.
District heating guards against fluctuations in electricity prices
The price development of district heating has been much more moderate than that of electric heating. District heating does not react to the energy crisis as strongly as the electricity market does, as the cost of energy sources used in producing district heating has not risen in the same way the price of electricity has.
Our aim is to keep district heating reliable and competitive in the future, as well. Over the last few decades, there has been long-term and sustainable development of our production. Among other things, we have moved more toward the use of biomass and Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF). The development activity and the addition of new energy production modes have been made as part of our carbon neutrality targets, but also to ensure security of supply of energy and price development in all circumstances. Our goal will continue to be to ensure stable prices and maintenance of district heating, safety and security of supply, and environmental friendliness.
The new price list is valid effective 1 January 2023. A newsletter and the new price list have been mailed on 10 October 2022.
