Oulun Energia receives a special recognition award for developing the streams in Hupisaaret Islands city park
Oulujoen reitti ry has awarded the Vuoden vesistötekopalkinto (waterway action of the year award) this year as a community recognition to the key players in the development of the Hupisaaret streams: Natural Resources Institute Finland, Oulun Energia, the City of Oulu, and the North Ostrobothnia Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment.
Oulujoen reitti ry justifies the award by saying that the Hupisaaret streams project has for many years been very important in restoring flourishing running water to Oulu, where the spawning of migratory fish, especially sea trout, has started. The streams have increased both locals’ and visitors’ interest in nature surrounding running water and gained positive attention.
Our quality and environment director Tarja Väyrynen accepted the recognition on Oulun Energia’s behalf at the evening for Hupisaaret and Merikoski on Wednesday, 3 May 2023.
Tarja Väyrynen, quality and environment director at Oulun Energia, accepted the award at Oulujoen reitti ry’s event on 5 May 2023.
“Oulun Energia has been doing voluntary environmental work to develop the Oulujoki river basin for a long time. The Merikoski fish pass turns 20 this year and the re-introduction of running water into the Hupisaaret streams is progressing rapidly, as seen even in the form of the community recognition. I would like to thank everyone for their collaboration and contribution,” says Tarja Väyrynen.
